To the casual observer, the fight shorts worn by mixed martial artists probably seem to be little more than beach shorts. Because the shorts that MMA fighters wear are pulled at, grounded upon, beat and bended, bunched and twisted they need to be much more than what they appear to be.
After all, mixed martial arts fight shorts spend a large amount of time being ground into the surfaces of training mats and octagons. Of course, shorts are not able to handle this grinding and dragging without being constructed of specialized tough materials that possess higher than normal thread counts. Furthermore, these shorts are tugged and pulled upon pretty much in every fight and training session. To handle this pulling and tugging, they need to be made of poly-directional fabrics that give without tearing when pulled upon. This special fabric is also why the shorts do not lose shape after being pulled and yanked upon.
The seams of mixed martial arts fight shorts must be just as tough as the fabric is. The type of stitching holding the seams together is the key to having long-lasting seams. To be strong, the sewing is done with specialized thread and done in a repetitive high-strength pattern. But, the thing about MMA fighting shorts is that they must not merely be stitched so their seams are tough, they also have to be put together in such a way that they provide their wearers with a wide range of motion while also staying in place at all times.
Of course, quality MMA fight shorts need to be more than just durable and able to provide a full range of movement. These traits, though second tier, are still terribly nice things to have in your fighting shorts. These additional traits mean they are able to stop the shorts from being stained, from picking up mildew or smells. Mixed martial arts is a sweat-filled, dirty and bloody game and your shorts need to be able to thrive within this environment as well as you do. Also, with you most likely storing your shorts in a bag after your fights and workouts, you need shorts that will resist mildew.
Fighters need to make sure they know what what to look for as they are comparing shorts to purchase.
